About HeatPumpIndex
Last updated: By HeatPumpIndex Evidence Desk
HeatPumpIndex is an independent directory that ranks Greater Toronto Area heat pump installers and HVAC contractors by a published score out of 100, with researched local pricing. This page explains who builds HeatPumpIndex, how it works, and the editorial rules that keep the rankings honest.
Who runs HeatPumpIndex?
HeatPumpIndex is compiled and maintained by the HeatPumpIndex Evidence Desk, an independent editorial team. We are not owned by, funded by, or affiliated with any listed business, and no business can pay for a better position. The team builds the dataset from public Google Maps records, applies the ranking formula published on our methodology page, and reviews every dataset and price guide before it goes live.
What does HeatPumpIndex do?
HeatPumpIndex does two things. First, it ranks heating and cooling companies across the Greater Toronto Area by the HeatPumpIndex score, so you compare real businesses instead of ad placements. Second, it researches what this work actually costs locally, with every figure tied to a named source. There is no lead selling here: each claimed profile carries the company's own phone number to contact the business directly, and every other profile carries a request form that reaches HeatPumpIndex. We currently track 618 businesses in 6 categories, from whole-home installs to repairs and water heaters.
How does HeatPumpIndex make money without selling rankings?
HeatPumpIndex is free to browse and free to be listed on. There is a request form, and what you send through it reaches HeatPumpIndex; we do not sell your details to anyone. Today the directory earns nothing; if it ever does, revenue will come from clearly labelled promotion, kept separate from the rankings on purpose. No company can buy a higher rank, ever. Keeping money and rankings apart is the whole point, because a directory you cannot trust is worthless.
What are HeatPumpIndex's editorial standards?
HeatPumpIndex follows four rules on every page. Rankings are never for sale, review data comes only from public Google Maps profiles, market pricing is always attributed to a named source, and any homeowner or business owner can request a correction. Those standards are what let us claim these 618 listings are ranked on merit.
No pay-to-rank
Order comes from a formula that is published in full on the methodology page. No installer, manufacturer or rebate programme can buy a position here, and none has been offered one.
Public Google review data
Stars and review counts are lifted from public Google Maps data and printed unchanged. No review on this site is written, bought or edited by us, and no contractor sees a rating before it publishes.
Named pricing sources
Cost figures cite the specific Canadian contractor, supplier or authority they came from, so you can check them yourself.

What is in the HeatPumpIndex dataset?
The August 2026 HeatPumpIndex dataset holds 618 GTA heating and cooling businesses spread across 6 categories and 50 mapped areas. Across the 586 rated companies the Google average sits at 4.8 stars, with a median of 66 reviews per business, and 81.2% of them hold a rating of 4.8 stars or higher. We map each company to a Toronto neighbourhood, borough or GTA city so results reflect who serves your street.
Of those 618 businesses, 343 say on their own website that they do heat pump work, and their profile pages say so. Separately, 187 appear on Ontario's public register of contractors signed up for the Home Renovation Savings heat pump rebate. We report that as a plain fact of membership, which is all the programme allows: it states outright that it backs none of the companies on its list. Between the two, 387 carry at least one kind of evidence. The remaining 231 are heating and cooling companies in the same service area whose websites do not mention heat pumps either way. For 135 of them there was little or nothing to read: no website, a site that would not load, or a page under 300 words. The other 96 have a working site of some length that simply never brings heat pumps up. Neither is a mark against them, so we do not put a badge on it. What we will not do is count a customer mentioning a heat pump in a review as the company saying it fits them. Ask before you book.
