How Much Does a Heat Pump Water Heater Cost in Toronto in 2026?

Last updated: By HeatPumpIndex Evidence Desk

The tank is only part of it. A heat pump water heater needs a dedicated electrical circuit, somewhere for condensate to drain, and enough air volume around it to work properly, so basement conditions change the install cost. If you are replacing a gas tank, decommissioning the gas line requires a certified technician, and a rental tank has its own contract terms.

What does a heat pump water heater cost installed in the GTA?

This range rests on 4 independent published sources, across 9 priced lines. Every figure was re-found in the page it is credited to, and each row carries the condition that source attached to it. Where the sources disagree, both numbers are shown and neither range is stretched to cover the gap.

The heat pump water heater bands sit on the same axis as the conventional tanks this page prices for comparison, so the premium reads as a distance rather than as a subtraction you have to do yourself.

The installed price, with the publisher's own working shown

One source on this page prices the unit, the labour and the installed total as three separate lines, so the arithmetic is visible rather than assumed. Read the first two and then the third: they are the same publisher, and they agree.

What the installed total is made of

The unit on its own

$3,800–$5,000 equipment only (CAD), Hot Water Ottawa (2026 water heater cost guide)

Equipment tier and tank capacity move this line.

The labour to fit it

$2,000–$2,500 labour only (CAD), Hot Water Ottawa (2026 water heater cost guide)

Published against a straight electric tank swap, which the same source prices at well under half as much.

Which is what the installed total comes to

$5,800–$7,500 per project (CAD), Hot Water Ottawa (2026 water heater cost guide)

The same publisher's own installed figure. It is the two lines above added together, which is a rarer thing to be able to check than it should be.

And one line that is easy to forget

Taking the old tank away

$100–$200 add-on to project (CAD), Hot Water Ottawa (2026 water heater cost guide)

What the basement has to allow before any of it applies

  • A dedicated electrical circuit, which a replaced electric tank may not have provided.
  • Somewhere for condensate to drain, which a conventional tank does not require.
  • Enough air volume and clearance around the unit, which can rule out a small sealed closet before price enters it.
  • Decommissioning the gas line, if you are replacing a gas tank, which requires a certified technician.
  • Ending an existing rental agreement, if the tank you have now is rented, which can be the deciding number.

Every figure above is read from the price table on this page at build time. All four are Ottawa pricing, which is what the sources publish; nothing on this page converts them to Toronto.

What drives the price?

Capacity, the state of the electrical panel and how much of the existing system can be reused move heat pump water heater installation pricing more than the brand on the box. Each factor below is tied to a figure in the table above.

  • Equipment tier and tank capacity, with the unit alone at $3,800 to $5,000 (Hot Water Ottawa, Ottawa pricing)
  • Electrical work, since these units generally require a dedicated 240 volt circuit that a replaced electric tank may not have provided
  • Installation complexity, with hybrid labour at $2,000 to $2,500 against $800 to $900 for a straight electric tank swap (Hot Water Ottawa, Ottawa pricing)
  • Available air volume and clearance around the install location, which can rule out small closets entirely
  • Condensate drainage, which a conventional tank does not require
  • Whether the space has the air volume and clearance the unit needs, since a small sealed closet can rule the install out before price enters it
  • Old tank removal and disposal, $100 to $200 (Hot Water Ottawa, Ottawa pricing)
  • Whether an existing rental agreement must be bought out before ownership is possible

What's specific to Ontario and Toronto?

13% HST, the Home Renovation Savings rebate rules and Toronto’s older housing stock each change the arithmetic, and national price guides miss all three. Every rebate figure below is printed with the condition that decides who qualifies for it.

  • Ontario's Home Renovation Savings program offers $500 back on a qualified heat pump water heater, but not on its own. Save on Energy lists it only under the bundled path - start with a home energy assessment, then complete TWO OR MORE upgrades - and not in the single-upgrade list that lets you skip the assessment. The unit must also carry the ENERGY STAR mark. Buy one as a standalone replacement and the rebate is nothing.
  • The space heating rebate is far larger and does depend on your fuel: a cold climate air source heat pump pays up to $2,000 in a home currently heated by natural gas and up to $7,500 in a home heated by electricity, oil, propane or wood. Those two figures were read from the official programme page on 2026-08-03 at https://www.homerenovationsavings.ca/without-assessment/heat-pumps. Either way the water heater rebate changes the arithmetic on this page far less.
  • The $500 is paid only on a model carrying the ENERGY STAR mark. Check that the exact unit appears on the applicable ENERGY STAR list before purchase, because a comparable model without the mark returns nothing.
  • Ontario HST is 13% and applies to the whole invoice. On a $5,800 installed hybrid that is about $754, and on a $7,500 one about $975, so establish whether a quote is HST included before comparing two of them.
  • Many Ontario households rent their water heater rather than owning it. Before pricing a hybrid purchase, confirm what ending an existing rental agreement costs, since that can be the deciding number.
  • Toronto basements are the typical install location. The unit cools and dehumidifies the space it draws from, which is usually welcome in a Toronto basement in summer and less so in a finished, heated basement in winter.

How can I pay less?

The largest savings come from timing the job, checking rebate eligibility before you buy, and getting the scope of each quote in writing. Each lever below is tied to a figure in the table above.

  • Get quotes across the full published band. The Toronto source on this page quotes $3,000 to $5,000 and the Ottawa source $5,800 to $7,500 for the same category of work, which is the widest relative spread of any item on this site.
  • Do not count on the $500 rebate until you have checked how you qualify. It requires a home energy assessment plus at least one other upgrade, and a model carrying the ENERGY STAR mark. On a standalone replacement it is worth nothing.
  • Check the electrical situation first. If a dedicated 240 volt circuit already exists, you avoid a cost that pushes hybrid labour to the top of the $2,000 to $2,500 range.
  • Be realistic about the comparison. Against a $1,900 to $2,200 electric tank, the Ottawa hybrid figures put the premium at roughly $3,600 to $5,300 before any rebate, so the case rests on running cost over the life of the unit rather than upfront price.
  • Replace before failure. An emergency replacement removes your ability to shop the $3,000 to $7,500 published band and usually results in whatever conventional tank is on the truck.
  • If you rent your current tank, price the buyout before anything else. That number frequently decides whether owning a hybrid makes sense at all.

How did we research these numbers?

Every price on this page was traced back to the page that published it and re-found there, and each row states the caveat that source attached. Where the 4 sources disagree, both figures are printed and the disagreement is named. Nothing is averaged, and no range is widened to paper over a gap.

  • Published Ontario prices for a heat pump water heater span a wide band, and the two ends are from different cities. Imperial Energy quotes $3,000 to $5,000 installed in Toronto. Hot Water Ottawa quotes $5,800 to $7,500 installed, splitting that into $3,800 to $5,000 for the unit and $2,000 to $2,500 for labour - but says plainly those are average costs in the Ottawa area. Get quotes from both ends of that range before assuming either is the Toronto market price.
  • A heat pump water heater costs roughly three times a standard electric tank. Hot Water Ottawa prices a conventional electric tank at $1,900 to $2,200 installed and a gas tank at $2,100 to $3,100, against $5,800 to $7,500 for the hybrid heat pump version. All three of those are Ottawa figures, so read the ratio between them rather than the absolute numbers.
  • The installation is a large part of the gap, not just the unit. Hot Water Ottawa puts labour on a hybrid at $2,000 to $2,500 against $800 to $900 for an electric tank. These units typically need a dedicated 240 volt circuit, condensate drainage and enough air volume around them to draw heat from.
  • Location inside the house matters more than for any other water heater. These units pull heat from surrounding air, so a small sealed closet will not work. Basements and open utility rooms are the standard Toronto application.
  • Ongoing costs are modest. Hot Water Ottawa puts annual maintenance at $100 to $200 per year for a hybrid, the same band it quotes for conventional tanks, and a one-off $100 to $200 to drain, disconnect and haul away the old tank.
  • Most of the itemised pricing on this page is from a single Ottawa source, and only one figure on it - Imperial Energy's $3,000 to $5,000 - was published for Toronto. Treat the rest as an Ontario reference point rather than a surveyed Toronto average, and get three local quotes.

What do the neighbouring jobs cost?

What do the terms on a heat pump quote mean?

These are the words that appear on a GTA quote and change what it costs. Each one is defined here in the sense the trade uses it.

Hybrid (heat pump) water heater
A tank that heats water by moving heat out of the surrounding air rather than by burning fuel or running an element, falling back to a resistance element when demand outruns it. Because it draws heat from the room, it needs air volume around it and it cools and dehumidifies that space, which is why a small sealed closet can rule the install out.
The ENERGY STAR mark
An efficiency mark administered in Canada by Natural Resources Canada. It matters here because it is a rebate condition rather than a quality opinion: Ontario's Home Renovation Savings rebate for a heat pump water heater is paid only on a model carrying the mark.
Home Renovation Savings programme
Ontario's residential efficiency rebate programme, delivered under the Save on Energy brand of the Independent Electricity System Operator. Some upgrades are paid as single upgrades; others are only paid if you start with a home energy assessment and then complete two or more upgrades, which is the distinction that decides whether a given rebate is available to you at all.
COP (coefficient of performance)
Heat delivered divided by electricity consumed, at a stated outdoor temperature. A COP of 3 means three units of heat for one unit of electricity. Because it is quoted at a temperature, a COP with no temperature beside it says very little.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a heat pump water heater cost in Toronto?

Only one source publishes a Toronto figure: Imperial Energy quotes $3,000 to $5,000 installed, including the unit and professional installation. The other pricing on this page is from Hot Water Ottawa, which quotes $5,800 to $7,500 installed - $3,800 to $5,000 for the unit and $2,000 to $2,500 for labour - and states those are average costs in the Ottawa area. That is a wide band for the same category across two cities, so get three local quotes rather than budgeting from any single figure.

How much more does a heat pump water heater cost than a regular tank?

Roughly three times as much. On Hot Water Ottawa's Ottawa-area figures, a standard electric tank costs $1,900 to $2,200 installed and a gas tank $2,100 to $3,100, against $5,800 to $7,500 for a hybrid heat pump unit. A gas tankless unit sits between them at $3,900 to $5,500. The $500 Ontario rebate closes only a small part of that gap, and only if you qualify for it.

Is there an Ontario rebate for heat pump water heaters?

Yes, $500 - but it is conditional in a way that catches people out. Save on Energy lists the $500 heat pump water heater rebate only under the bundled path: start with a home energy assessment, then complete two or more upgrades. It is NOT in the single-upgrade list that lets you skip the assessment, so replacing a water heater on its own does not earn it. The unit must also carry the ENERGY STAR mark. The far larger space heating rebate is a different programme stream: up to $2,000 for a cold climate air source heat pump in a home currently heated by natural gas at $500 per ton, and up to $7,500 in a home heated by electricity, oil, propane or wood at $1,250 per ton.

Why is installation more expensive than for a regular water heater?

On Hot Water Ottawa's Ottawa-area figures, labour runs $2,000 to $2,500 for a hybrid against $800 to $900 for a standard electric tank. The unit generally needs a dedicated 240 volt circuit, condensate drainage, and enough surrounding air volume to draw heat from - a set of requirements a like-for-like tank swap does not create.

Where in the house can a heat pump water heater go?

It needs a space with enough air volume to draw heat from, which in Toronto usually means a basement or an open utility room rather than a small sealed closet. The unit cools and dehumidifies whatever space it sits in, which is generally welcome in a basement and less so in a finished heated one.

What does a heat pump water heater cost to maintain?

Hot Water Ottawa puts it at $100 to $200 per year, the same band it quotes for conventional tank systems, covering cleaning the filters and checking the heat pump is working. Removing and disposing of the old tank at replacement time adds a one-off $100 to $200. Both are Ottawa figures.

Questions to ask your contractor

  • Is there enough air volume in that space for the unit to work properly?
  • Where does the condensate drain to, and is a pump needed? What the install adds to the tank price
  • Does the panel have room for a dedicated circuit?
  • How cold will it make the room it sits in?
  • If I am replacing a rental tank, who handles the return and the contract?
